32-BIT or 64-BIT Decision
32-BIT or 64-BIT – Which version should I use?
The choice between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Smart Report Organizer (SRO) is primarily based on the Crystal Reports version and the data access technology used by your reports. It is not determined by the Windows operating system.
Crystal Reports versions prior to 2020 are 32-bit applications. They typically use 32-bit database drivers (such as ODBC, OLE DB, or ADO). Starting with Crystal Reports 2020, Crystal Reports is a native 64-bit application and usually works with 64-bit database drivers.
Please note that a report’s database driver can be changed over time (for example, from a 32-bit to a 64-bit driver). In such cases, the required SRO version may also change accordingly.
Recommended guidelines for choosing your SRO version
-
SRO 32-BIT (recommended)
Suitable for reports created with Crystal Reports 2008, 2011, 2013, or 2016, especially when they use 32-bit database drivers. -
SRO 64-BIT (recommended)
Suitable for reports created with Crystal Reports 2020 or 2025, especially when they use 64-bit database drivers.
In many real-world environments, customers operate a mix of older and newer reports, or plan a gradual migration from 32-bit to 64-bit database drivers. For this reason, SRO 32-bit and SRO 64-bit can be installed and used side by side on the same machine (with a valid SRO license), providing maximum flexibility and a smooth transition.
Recommendation: When in doubt, or when planning future migrations, running both SRO versions in parallel is the safest and most flexible approach.
